~Review~ A Little Bit Like Love by Brooke Blaine

A Little Bit Like Love (South Haven, #1)A Little Bit Like Love by Brooke Blaine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is not only a book that you read, it’s one that you drown in, you let it wash over you and consume you….and it’s wonderful. Jackson and Lucas are flawed yet perfect, scarred yet beautiful, stubborn yet giving. They are a lesson in – cherish what you have right in front of you, hold on tight and don’t let go.
Dropping my head into my hands, I said, “You’ll have to help me out here. I don’t….know how to tell him any of this. Or if I should.”
“You just did,” Jackson said from behind me

Sigh….see what I mean? If you don’t, just read this….no, just feel this. It’s that warm cup of cocoa on a cold winter’s day – a little too dangerous and hot to touch at first but, if you’re patient, if you take your time and nurture it…..once you take that sip it will be beautifully perfect.

Kyle Vaughn had three goals in life: become a vet, find the man of his dreams, and start a family. He easily checked off the first item on the list when he took over his grandfather’s veterinary practice. Too bad he wasn’t as lucky in love.

Chaz Hamilton took a leap of faith when he decided to pursue a career in writing, but one best seller didn’t mean he could quit his day job. All work and no play threatened to make Chaz a very dull man when the only romantic action he saw was in the pages of his manuscript. Too bad he couldn’t write his own happily every after.

Circumstances pushed the two men together, and one magical kiss beneath fireworks and stars changed everything. Kyle knew his luck had finally turned around and Chaz found a man far better than any book boyfriend ever written. There was just one problem. Chaz has kept a secret from Kyle that could ruin their chance at a beautiful life together.

Kyle and Chaz learn that the best-laid plans often go awry, the heart has a mind of its own, and the greatest love is unscripted.

The books in the Road to Blissville series can be read either as standalone books or as part of the series. This book contains sexually explicit material and is intended for mature adults 18 and older.

Dr. Vaughn!” A familiar female voice exclaimed. “Oh my goodness! You’re the answer to my prayers.”

I spun around and faced Jenny Davis who operated the Carter County Animal Shelter. “That’s what he said,” I replied, jerking my thumb in Chaz’s direction without thinking my actions through. Chaz gasped, Josh threw his head back and laughed in delight, and I’m pretty sure that Andy growled. I chanced a peek at Chaz’s and caught him staring at me with a dumbfounded expression on his face. How much more obvious did I need to be that I wanted to see where things could go between us?

“Is this a bad time?” she asked nervously. “I’d like to ask a favor of you.” My staff and I volunteered ten to fifteen hours a week treating the dogs and cats at her shelter. The last time I was there, she mentioned that she needed to raise money for the shelter. I figured that she wanted to discuss a fundraiser with me.

“Not at all, Jenny. Josh will be delayed a few minutes, so I have time now.”

“Well, it’s a big favor,” she said hesitantly. “Remember how I mentioned a fundraiser to you?”

“Sure and I’ll help out however I can,” I told her.

“I’m so glad you feel that way because you play a big part in what I have in mind.” She clapped her hands and bounced on her feet. “I can’t believe I didn’t think of this sooner,” she said to herself.

“How big?” I asked, narrowing my eyes as an uneasy feeling came over me.

That feeling only increased when she broke eye contact and looked down at her feet. “We’d like to do a calendar with the animals at the shelter. One of my staff is an amateur photographer and is willing to donate the time to take and edit the photos.”

“So you’re looking for donations to cover the cost of producing the calendars? I’ll gladly help out with that,” I told her. Jenny didn’t meet my offer with as much enthusiasm as I expected.

“Not exactly the kind of help I was looking for from you,” she said.

“No? How else can I be of service to you?” I asked, clearly confused. I provided free veterinarian services and offered to…

“She wants you to pose for the calendar,” Chaz said, interrupting my thoughts.

I looked over at him and rolled my eyes. “No, she doesn’t.”

“Oh, I think that’s exactly what she’s working her courage up to ask,” Chaz told me. “Isn’t that right, Jenny?”

I looked at Jenny, expecting her to brush off his idea, but all I saw was a hopeful gleam in her green eyes. “Me?” I asked in disbelief.

“Why not you?” Jenny asked, seemingly emboldened when I didn’t refuse the idea outright. “You’re gorgeous, built like a brick house, and adore animals. Who else would I ask?”

“I don’t know, Jenny,” I said hesitantly. “I’m not very photogenic.”

“Stop being so modest,” Jenny told me. “You’re exactly what we need. I can see it now…” Her voice trailed off while she envisioned something in her mind. “Shirtless poses with a kitty, cowboy hat and boots while standing beside a horse…”

“I’d be wearing more than just a pair of boots and a hat, right?” I asked, needing clarification before the conversation went any further.

“Dr. Vaughn!” Jenny’s said in shock. “Why, I’d never suggest such a thing.” Then she covered her mouth with both hands and giggled nervously. “Oh my,” she answered, fanning herself. “That’s not at what I meant at all. Dear me, I meant my offer as a complement, Dr. Vaughn. I thought your love for animals combined with your hunky looks would make a great fundraiser.”

“It would probably sell a lot of calendars,” Chaz said, chiming in.

I looked over at him and caught him staring at me speculatively. “But would you buy a calendar?” I asked.

“Duh,” Chaz said, then added, “it’s for charity.”

I’ll admit. It’s been a long time since I read a vampire book. But if this is what I have to look forward to if I take up reading them again? Then sign me up! This book was refreshing, intense, mind-blowing and off the charts hot….like really off the charts…..like not in the same universe hot. Karl was the exact amount of brooding, intensity that he needed to be without being over the top. Zayn was simply beautiful. And Ethan…..well, he was just Ethan….until he wasn’t….because he became something more when he finally met Zayn and Karl. And the three of them together? Breathtaking. Some books you read and they’re smooth, they don’t challenge you, they flow down your throat like a smooth whiskey. Others, well, they bite. They not only challenge you but they test you, they’re the rough shot of Tequila that makes you grimace and shiver, wondering why you do this to yourself and then that warmth finally hits, that feeling of floating as you smile and nod and think ‘yeah – it was worth that burn’ That’s what this story is. Dylan had such a beautiful heart that you can feel it. And his sarcasm, his wit will make you laugh out loud many times. And Gabe, well, Gabe….he’s that insurmountable mountain that you stare up at from the beginning of the trail and think ‘I’m really going to hate this…and it’s going to hurt but….’. Yeah, but you go up anyways. For the challenge, for the right to say ‘I did this, I made it’ and after you read things like this:
‘You were right to leave me, because I needed to take a long look at myself. I know now that you’re somehow everything that I never knew I needed….’
and this
‘You could go out tomorrow and find someone better for you but the truth is that no one will ever need you like I do.’
Yeah – after you read things like that, after you make that climb and stand proudly at the top and enjoy the view as you catch your breath….you’ll find that it’s totally worth it.

Looking For Love (Semper Fi, The Forever Faithful, #2)Looking For Love by Stella Starling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How can I put this? Micah – sweet Micah – he was a breath of fresh air, a cold drink on a hot day, a stunning sunset after a romantic date. He was refreshing and beautiful and contagious and, quite simply, one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time. Zach was…..as I frown at the screen…..at first sweet, charming and wonderful and then his gullibility and stupidity was confusing and frustrating. But he redeemed himself in the end, not succumbing to Janis and her lies but finally listening to Micah and realizing what a complete doofus he was being. And it’s a good thing too, because if he hadn’t – the readers wouldn’t have been treated to things like this:
Because kissing Zach? It felt like finally finding out what his lips had been made for. It felt like coming home
That, right there, is enough to put a pitter-pat in even the most jaded of hearts. This book was sweet, funny, intense, beautiful and refreshing.
This book will make you look at love with bright, fresh eyes – kind of like Micah……who, in my eyes, is pretty darn perfect. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.

Gilbert and Walden hooked up months ago, but neither have been able to forget the other. In this scene, Walden is visiting a near by hot springs and was in the process of getting ready to go home with another guy in order to wipe Gilbert from his mind. As fate would have it, Gilbert chose that very time to arrive at the hot springs, and stepped when he noticed what was getting ready and sent the stranger packing.

Walden’s brows furrowed. “That’s not the point. What are you doing here, in this pool?”
His tone was irritated, but I could swear it was more for show than anything. That he felt he should be annoyed. But I could also swear I felt the electricity radiating from his body, like he was barely containing himself from straddling my lap then and there. I wished he’d give in to that notion. As much as I’d decided I did have a thing for geeky hot, he looked as he had the first time I saw him. No glasses. Long, damp, dark blond waves around his face, droplets of water making their way over the pale skin of his shoulders and down his thick chest.
I shrugged. “You were about to make a mistake with that guy. I decided I should stop it.”
This time his irritation sounded more genuine. “Why would it have been a mistake? Not that it would be any business of yours if it was.”
“Because he isn’t me.” The words left my lips before I could stop them.
Walden flinched.
Shit. There was only one course of action to play this off without letting him see how much I’d been thinking about him. Luckily, that course wasn’t a lie, just not the entire truth. I scooted closer, close enough to touch him, but I wasn’t going to. I was already giving away too much about myself. He was going to touch me first. “Because if you’re going to get fucked tonight, it needs to be with someone who can do it right, give you what you want, give it to you the way you need it.” I cast a glance toward the man, who was still staring at us, enjoying my victory over him more than was decent, I was sure. “Because he sure as hell couldn’t satisfy what I know you crave.”
Walden shivered, and his lips parted. Though his mouth moved, no words came out, and he licked his lips. He wanted me. Wanted me so fucking much.
I wished he wanted me more than I wanted him. Hell, I wished I could even lie to myself enough that I’d believe that. But even I wasn’t that good at self-deception. There’d been countless men since December. And each one managed to possess some aspect of Walden. And not one of them measured up to the real thing. I couldn’t let Walden see that, though. “Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me anyone can do to your body what I can do.”
I swear he almost touched me. I felt his hand move under the water, and I prepared for the contact I’d wanted for months. Then a shadow crossed his features, and he pulled his hand back. “And what is it you want from my body, Gilbert? Just to make you feel good about yourself?”
Spoiler alert: Gilbert wants so much from Walden than just his body….

Book 1 in The Lavender Shores series.

Confident businessman Joel Rhodes sees the small California town of Lavender Shores as nothing more than a business transaction and a final stepping-stone to the position he’s been working towards his entire life. It was supposed to be nothing more than one night in town to close the deal, and sleeping with one of the local men, no matter how gorgeous, meant nothing more than a few hours of fun.
Andrew Kelly is perfectly content with the life he has in his hometown. So much so, that the only thing missing is someone to share it with. Going to bed with a tourist was never meant to be the answer to his dreams, just a beautiful distraction. He could get back to looking for Mr. Right the next day.
Both Andrew and Joel’s worlds are turned upside down when a few hours of pleasure gets extended to a couple of days. Even that shouldn’t be a big deal. You can’t fall in love in such a short time, that isn’t how it works. However, if destinies collide, a few short days may be all it takes to find your soul mate. Even so, when secrets and motivations get tangled, destiny may do nothing more than leave two hearts in pieces.
Rosalind Abel grew up tending chickens alongside her sweet and faithful Chow, Lord Elgin. While her fantasy of writing novels was born during her teen years, she never would have dreamed she’d one day publish steamy romances about gorgeous men. However, sometimes life turns out better than planned.
In between crafting scorching sex scenes and helping her men find their soul mates, Rosalind enjoys cooking, collecting toys, and making the best damn scrapbooks in the world (this claim hasn’t been proven, but she’s willing to put good money on it).
She adores MM Romance, the power it has to sweep the reader away into worlds filled with passion, steam, and love. Rosalind also enjoys her collection of plot bunnies and welcomes new fuzzy ones into her home all the time, so feel free to send any adorable ones her way.

About Brooke Blaine:

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

She is the author of Flash Point, a romantic suspense standalone, as well as the co-author of the erotic series, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released November 11th, 2015 and is the first in the L.A. Liaisons series.

If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find – just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

How do I write this review? I need to be honest here but also feel the need to explain. I really enjoyed this book, I did. But you need to have a thick skin to read it, it is not for everyone. It’s brutal, hard, sharp-edged with a little bit of tender and sweet thrown in for good measure. I love books like that – but even I cringed a few times, squirmed because parts of it made me uncomfortable. I don’t let that take away from the beautiful tapestry that was eventually weaved within the pages of this story. This was a hard fought battle and Roman, Luke and this reader all eventually won.

How could I not identify with this story? Weight issues? check. Self-image issues? Check. Low-self-esteem? Check. At times I felt like I was Eric. But at others I felt like I was Corey. In other words, we all have our issues, every one of us, and just because someone might ‘look normal’ on the outside doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling too. Something to keep in mind as we rush through our busy days – and something that this beautiful story conveys perfectly. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.
