Unforgiven by Ruth Clampett
Publication Date: March 9th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Would you live a lie to hold onto the one you love?

Dean and Jason are best friends, like brothers since boyhood, now architecture students and college roommates. They’ve always had each other’s back, but when one walks in on the other with another man, everything changes. How do you explain to your best friend that he’s the one you’ve always wanted, that until now your life has been a lie?

Desperation and shame are two dirty words that run through Jason’s veins. He carries the scars from a wayward priest who stole his innocence and left him shattered. Meanwhile for years he’s watched Dean pursuing woman after woman, as his own heart slowly breaks.

When their world blows apart, they learn the powerful bond between them has more fire than either understood. Can two broken souls find the light in their darkness and come together to make a whole, or will sins of the past be forever unforgiven?

***This standalone is a M/M love story with graphic sex. Trigger warning.

Holy emotional roller coaster ride. Let me see if I can put together what I felt when reading this: beautifully tragic, heart-wrenchingly amazing, horrifically stunning. It was all of these things. A yin and a yang. Tragic yet beautiful, dark and light, sad and happy, lonely and loving. To sum it up in a single word……perfect. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

~Review~ The Misadventures of Doc and Dirk, Volume IV by Dan Skinner

The Misadventures of Doc and Dirk, Volume IVThe Misadventures of Doc and Dirk, Volume IV by Dan Skinner

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I needed to take a few days after I finished this to compose my review. Why? Because these books, this series and the beautiful men who we are so lucky that they choose to share their lives with us – they MEAN something to me, they are important, they matter….and my review should too. As Dan so eloquently says “I’ve learned from someone younger than me that teachers come in all ages…..to say maybe instead of no, until you can say yes…to look at your limitations for what they really are…barriers you have to go around, above, beneath or through.” Those words hit me right in the chest, made me blink and just sit back and think for a moment. Because as much as I love the laughter, joy and levity these books bring, it’s these thoughtful, profound, meaningful moments that truly capture my heart. And this book was filled with those moments, a lot of them, so many that I had to go back and re-read it as soon as I was done just to make sure that I soaked them all in. So thank you Doc and Dirk, Doz and all the other wonderful people who fill these pages, and my heart, with love.

Finally, Ashley took a deep breath and let it out, then pulled his glasses off and set them on the bar before turning his eyes to me.

“We have a problem,” he started. “You’re a student. I’m a teacher. You’re my student. And I’m your teacher. The board would be all over this. And I can’t risk my…” He stopped talking to take a few breaths, his dark eyes not leaving mine and saying so much. “But at the same time…”

Ashley started walking toward me. Slow, measured steps as he spoke. “I can’t stop thinking about you,” he continued. “And now…after these past few hours…I look at you. I listen to you. You make me laugh. You make me think. You make me feel…And I just can’t make myself walk away.”

Silence fell in the room as he stopped talking and walking, mere inches from me. We stood eye-to-eye and I slowly inhaled, his scent, now accented with sea air, sinking into me.

“Am I crazy, or do you feel it?” he asked, his voice a strangled whisper, his eyes boring into mine. “That?”

There was a moment. Like the split second before a popcorn kernel pops. That was me. I was like a popcorn kernel. In an instant I had one hand behind his neck and the other around his waist pulling him in to me, my mouth crashing onto his. I felt every fiber of him respond when one of his hands dug into my hair—his fingers weaving tightly in the strands, the other fiercely gripping my ass, holding on for dear life. Our mouths consumed each other, teeth clashing, lips bruising.

Ashley fiercely pushed at me, walking me backward until I was nearly slammed into the wall, his hips pressing into mine, our engorged cocks pressing into each other behind our pants.

Fuck, yeah! This. This—is—it.

I pulled his head back from mine, breaking the kiss, but not our grip. “That? Do I feel that?” I breathed heavily, needing to fill my lungs with air. “Yeah. I feel it.”

Conflicted. That’s the best way to describe how I felt about this book. I loved the storyline, loved the characters, the chemistry between them was amazing and the sex was off the charts hot. But please. Tone down the descriptors. I don’t need it described twenty different ways in a dozen different chapters someone’s ripped abs or toned physique or strong muscles. I get it. They’re both hot. Describe them and move on. Don’t do it over and over using other adjectives. All you’ll get from that is an eye roll. So for the story, heat and Ashley and Taylor I’d give this a firm four stars. But for the over abundance of body descriptions that felt like nothing more than filler? Knocks it down to a three. “I’m glad you were there that day, Dad”. Sigh. That line says so much. About growth, about acceptance, about love, about finding out who you really are. This book was powerful. It was tough because you knew something horrible was coming like a black cloud on the horizon but you were powerless to stop it. Thankfully, when it came, it wasn’t just you who had to face it. No, it felt like the reader had the strength of Quinn and Brody there to help you through. And the quiet, beautiful strength of Beck? That was the most powerful of them all. I finished this last night but needed to take a little time before I wrote my review. This book, these two men, gah, it was everything. Watching them both struggle and push through their fears, their demons….and do it together even though that was the most frightening thing for both of them…..it was stunning, it was beautiful, it was heart wrenching……it was perfect.

I wanted to connect to this story. The storyline was there, the content was there. But what was missing for me was the emotional connection to the characters. I liked them but never enough to really care one way or another if they made it through. The story intrigued me but it didn’t grab me. I just felt like it was missing just a little something, a tiny push that would’ve put me into fully invested in it. So good but not great. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Okay. I kind of feel like this should come with a reward, a high five for getting through it. Not because it was bad, not at all. It’s because it was hard, really, really hard to read this, brutal even, to be a witness to such a tormented life. But bad things happen in life to good people and you can’t look away just because it’s hard to see it. And once I began to know Jason I felt like I owed it to him to see him to the end of his story no matter how hard it was. And I did, without stopping. I couldn’t. I had to see the end. And though it was one of the hardest books I’ve ever read, it was so very much worth that difficult journey. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
